BRONCHO
BRONCHO
Oklahoma City band BRONCHO crafts sing-along anthems that combine punk and garage-rock. You could make all the likely comparisons to punk bands of the '70s — Ramones, Iggy Pop and The Stooges — or even bring up the new-school garage-rock undertones of The Strokes and The Strange Boys. But that would sell the band short. If anything, it combines the best elements of both genres: raw guitar chords and energy, plus DIY sentiment, but with hi-fi production. - NPR

Perhaps the best debut album of 2011 came by way of BRONCHO, a garage-punk quartet from Norman, OK Frontman Ryan Lindsey is better known as the keyboardist for the Starlight Mints, but this side project has been touring the Midwest since early 2010. Can't Get Past the Lips hit stores August 2011, and "Try Me Out Sometime" was an instant standout. It's not a complex song, by any means, and the simplicity is fantastic because the execution is so strong. Three chords are plenty enough backdrop for Lindsey to yelp out the hooks. Watch the excellent music video, in which the band barges into unsuspecting, unlikely venues — stores, major intersections, a college classroom — and performs increasingly disastrous versions of the song before darting out. BRONCHO has never played a show outside a narrow corridor from Austin to Chicago, so coast-dwellers will have to cross their fingers for that to change soon. Wax Idols
Wax Idols
"Dark, dramatic post-punk from Oakland's awesome Wax Idols. Helmed by Hether Fortune, Wax Idols have improved on their already-great debut album in just about every way. The melodies are stronger, the vocals echoed and haunting, and the playing is at an unflagging level of intensity. While early 80s Siouxsie And The Banshees and 4AD are decent reference points, the song-writing is all Wax Idols and they bring a very modern sensibility, along with sterling production help from Monte Vallier (Weekend, The Soft Moon). It's pop in the largest sense - strongly melodic, confident and impossible to ignore." - via Slumberland Records

"...they're so fucking punk they've been known to cover Christian Death's "Romeo's Distress" live (which pretty much means that a band made up of three girls and a guy has more "cajones" than an upstate NY mosh-pit)."
Blank Tapes
Blank Tapes
"We discovered this lo-fi unsigned band - which somehow evokes Belle and Sebastion, Pavement, and the Black Keys - in a San Fran coffeehouse (just like the old days.) Quick, somebody sign them!" -ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE

THE BLANK TAPES is the monicker of LA/SF based multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Matt Adams, who has produced 7 albums of "winsome pop tunes" (OC WEEKLY) & "Kinks-plus-Creedence roots-rock ‘n’ roll" (LA RECORD) recorded almost entirely by himself on an 8 track cassette tape recorder in garages, basements & sheds across the coast. They recently toured Brazil for their second time after having 2 of their songs featured in TV commercials as well as playing 3 shows in 1 year at the Great American Music Hall in SF, headlining 2 of them! Adams and co. are currently finishing up a new studio album called VACATION as well as numerous other albums they've been hoarding .
